Do you collect sports memorabilia? Do you own Eric Heiden’s skates, a hockey puck from the Miracle on Ice or some other unique and cherished heirloom from the world of sports? Maybe you have Craig Wood’s clubs or he signed your grandmother’s blouse. Want to find out what they might be worth? Want to see and learn about what others have dragged out of their attics?
If so, attend the Wild and Wacky World of Sports Artifacts, an afternoon with Leila Dunbar, sports artifacts appraiser from the PBS hit Antique Appraisal series, who will be coming to the High Peaks Resort on Saturday, February 20 starting at 1 p.m. In addition to her work with PBS, Ms. Dunbar has made hundreds of media appearances and sold millions of dollars worth of sports artifacts through Sotheby’s including the bat that Babe Ruth used to hit the first home run in Yankee Stadium and the actual contract selling Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees.
Leila will give a lively presentation on Olympic and Sports Heroes and will be available to appraise your artifacts. Tickets are $20 for the presentation. A $30 ticket includes the presentation and appraisal of one item by Ms. Dunbar. Appraisals are limited: only 100 appraisal tickets will be sold. The afternoon will also include a concession stand, a display from the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Museum and a visit from Roni the Raccoon, the mascot of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
The event is being presented by the Lake Placid/Wilmington Connecting Youth and Communities Coalition, Olympic Regional Development Authority and the High Peaks Resort. The proceeds will be used to benefit the Wilmington Youth Center, which provides a wide variety of after-school activities for area kids including a state-of-the art bike park.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved by calling the Town of Wilmington at 946-7174 or emailing meparker78@yahoo.com. Tickets may also be purchased locally at The Bookstore Plus and the Lake Placid Christmas Company on Main St in Lake Placid; Ampersound Music at 11Woodruff Street and the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce at 193 River Street in Saranac Lake; and Cabin Fever Floral & Gifts at 233 Park Street in Tupper Lake.
